Invitation to Develop a Competitive Trading Platform

I received a notification in my email about an invitation to develop a trading platform. I replied to the email, and we started discussing the project. I asked for clarification on the final goal of the project. In a few words, the client is looking to create a product that can compete with BullX, MGMN, or Photon trading platforms.

first steps

PumpFun, Trenches & Meme Trading

Trading platforms are becoming more familiar to the general population, and the rise of meme trading has brought a significant number of users to blockchain technologies. This was the perfect moment for a user experience product designer to dive in, learn, and explore the meme trading space.

My experiences in the trenches have taught me a lot. I've encountered almost every scenario: getting rugged, riding a pump, becoming a bag holder, fumbling a bag, and getting caught in honeyspots. But, in my opinion, the worst experience is when you're unable to execute your order due to platform issues or slippage.

This is where I thought Nebula could be a great project. It motivated me to create a product that could address these pain points and deliver a strong, reliable experience for traders.

FIAT + TOKENS

Agreement "Airdrop"

The founder of Nebula told me he would be launching a token on the Ethereum blockchain. What he was looking to build was a strong website with some of the main interfaces of the product. Nebula will be a complete trading platform with modules like trading, wallet, holdings, memescope, and much more interaction.

The price I quoted to "Joel" was too high, as he mentioned, and he asked if I would support the project. In exchange, I would receive an airdrop of the token. I really liked the idea of building a meme platform, especially since the meme trading space on Solana is bringing a lot of users. I told him I would support the project, looking at it as a long-term opportunity. After our discussion, we exchanged Telegram handles, and I began working on the project.

Client Goal

Create a strong landing page showcasing seven of the main features present on the platform.

Users

Crypto users and active X users, ranging in age from 15 to 50 years old.

Research

I use and trade on all platforms present in the market to learn and gain inspiration.

Design Process

Web Design

The client wanted to create a platform with a space theme. I proposed an immersive space experience featuring an animated starry background. The landing page will be simple, with sections for the hero, team, features, contract, and footer.

First Proposal

The gif above was the first proposal for Nebula. It was rejected, and we received feedback suggesting it would be better to keep a single-color background and avoid using stock images from the internet. At this point, the user shared the requirements for the upcoming modules.

Platform Features

A trading meme platform typically offers features like real-time market tracking, meme-based token trading, a community-driven interface, and social sharing tools. Users can engage with trending memes, trade tokens inspired by viral trends, and access live charts for meme coin prices. Additional features may include custom alerts, leaderboard rankings, and integrations with popular wallets, all aimed at creating an interactive and fun trading experience while staying connected to the latest internet culture.

Design Process

Memescope

One of the challenging components was that we wanted to display too much information. The client wanted to show a lot of information, which made completing the component difficult. After many iterations, I proposed using hover interactions to display secondary information over the cards.

Hover Information

Since the card had too much information, I proposed to the user to use a hover interaction over the (i) icon to display secondary information.

FEATURE MEMESCOPE

How it works ?

The Memescope feature offers users a unique way to track trending meme tokens and coins in real time. It displays live data on the performance of popular meme assets, allowing users to easily spot trends and make informed decisions. With a user-friendly interface, Memescope delivers valuable insights while keeping the experience fun and engaging.

Trade UI

I designed a highly detailed and innovative trading interface with intuitive navigation, real-time market data, and advanced charting tools. Key features include custom alerts, a dynamic dashboard, and hover interactions for secondary information, keeping the platform clean while offering in-depth insights. The interface combines functionality and modern design to deliver a smooth, efficient trading experience.

Token Launch

Founder Strategy

Marketing Plan

I’ve already shared different parts of the process involved in building Nebula. As we approached the launch date, I began asking "Joel" about my airdrop. The token launch was set on the Ethereum blockchain with a 4% tax for both buying and selling, and the token started gaining traction.

However, I began receiving various excuses from him, such as the dev wallet not being able to withdraw a large amount of money, and he needed funds for marketing. The founder explained his plan, assuring me that they knew what they were doing. He mentioned they needed to pay KOLs first and promised that I would receive the airdrop in a week.

The launch was successful, and the Nebula token (0x541f9ac587be412ba0486ea3dbcf09dc11db76ce) quickly attracted a lot of investors. I worked hard to create a great experience, and I have to acknowledge my efforts. Even though the product wasn’t live yet, my contributions played a key role in the project's initial success.

Red Flags - Rug Pull

After a few weeks, the community began asking in the Telegram chat about when the product would go live, along with requests for updates and more information. However, the developer started to become less active, which raised some red flags. I was very disappointed about not receiving the airdrop, so I shared the story in the Telegram chat (of course, I was banned). Since I didn’t get the airdrop, I added a link to my website in the footer to acknowledge that I was the designer behind the project.

In short, I helped a founder create a rug pull without even realizing it. I had genuinely believed in the project, especially since I had been following and paying close attention to the growing demand for trading platforms like BullX and Photon. I decided to support the project with all my quality and professionalism. This experience taught me even more about the realities of the trenches.

Conclusions

WHat I learned?

Lessons

I created a complete trading experience for meme tokens that could compete with top players.

I gained valuable insights into CT and learned what it’s like to work in the trenches of the crypto world.

I believe platforms like Pump.fun aren’t good for the crypto ecosystem, as not everyone involved is a developer, and it can lead to harmful outcomes.

While Pump.fun may seem like a short-term success, it creates an on-chain economy that I believe will grow in the coming years.

Never trust just a nice website. This was the biggest lesson with Nebula. Traders in the trenches often make decisions based on the quality of the website, social media presence (like X and Telegram communities), and overall branding. A polished website can easily deceive people and trap them in a rug-pull project.

Building a trading meme platform was incredibly fun. I learned a lot about bots and trading platforms. My favorites are GMGN and the Trojan bot.
